Why did the city defund the police department?

The City did not, and has no plans to, defund the police department

What we did do, is ask each of the city’s departments to thoroughly scrub their budgets and eliminate any expenses that were not absolutely needed THIS YEAR.

Our police department identified about $900,000 in expenses that were deferred to a later date.

There has been no loss of service, no elimination of positions, or any other reduction in the department.  Whoever is saying that, is not telling the truth.  In addition, during this process, several re-assignments of personnel were performed that has increased the efficiency of the department.

And for our School Resource Officers…..

We continue to have every SRO at each school that we have ever had. There has been absolutely no reduction of SRO’s any school. What we did do, was negotiate with the Coppell ISD as a partial funding source. The SRO budget line item was changed to reflect that. Unfortunately, this item was reported incorrectly on social media. Whoever saw the change in the budget line item did not understand the entire budgeting process and made some assumptions that were just flat out wrong.
